Special Olympics GB transforms lives of people with intellectual disability.
Special Olympics Great Britain is a non-profit organisation and the largest provider of year-round sports coaching and athletic competition in summer and winter sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). We currently have more than 120 accredited clubs covering 28 sports across England, Scotland and Wales providing approximately 27,000 regular sporting sessions per year, all delivered by a team of over 3,700 dedicated volunteers.
In the UK there are over 1.5m people with an ID, a number which is predicted to grow. Two hundred babies are born each week with an ID in the UK; eight out of ten children with an ID are bullied and ALL are socially excluded.
But sport is only one part of what we do. Education and training, leadership, early intervention training and health screening programmes help create more inclusive communities and improve the health and well-being of our athletes.
Special Olympics GB offers more than just an opportunity to take part in sport - it transforms the lives of our athletes and their families. It provides opportunities to increase confidence, realise potential, develop physical fitness and mental well-being, demonstrate courage and experience new friendships. And above all for both athletes and their families - to have some FUN.
Too often people have told our athletes no, they can't take part in sport, school trips, friendship groups etc. Special Olympics GB prides itself on saying yes. YES, you can have a go, YES, you can be part of a community and have friends, YES, you can represent your country and win medals.
In March 2019, 128 athletes represented GB at the world`s largest sporting event this year. Not only did the team win 169 medals, they finished 6th out of 190+ countries. Even more amazing considering some of the athlete`s parents were told their child would never walk or talk, or even sit up.
The work of Special Olympics GB is currently funded by individual, trust and corporate donations and financial support is crucial to enable us to continue our work.
