A podcast series launched to give visibility to people whose lives are shaped by spinal cord injury (SCI) has won a prestigious accolade at the UK Content Awards.
Spinal Injuries Association’s ‘I Didn’t Plan on This’ podcast was named Podcast/Audio Campaign of the Year at the ceremony in London last month.
The podcast series, released in February 2026, was hosted by Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) Ambassador Zoe Fox and Support Network Manager Gary Dawson, who, without filter, shared some of the toughest challenges they face every day.
The hosts also invited guests on the show to discuss often-avoided topics, such as intimacy, trauma, fertility and identity, with dignity and care.
Notable guests included TV presenter and former wheelchair rugby captain Steve Brown and Mohammed Belal, who in 2022 became the first UK surgeon to operate after paralysis.
The aim of the podcast was to reflect more than the usual triumph over tragedy narrative that exists in many media outlets and reflect the truth often missing from public perception.
Commenting on the win, Zoe said: “It is fantastic to see the raw and honest experiences of those living with spinal cord injury recognised in this way. We took creative risks, discussing topics often avoided—intimacy, trauma, fertility, identity, family planning—and did so with dignity and care.”
The SIA said: “We would like to thank all our amazing guests for talking so openly about often sensitive subject matter, and to all who have downloaded or streamed the podcast to date.”
The UK Content Awards shine a spotlight on the most innovative, impactful, and creative content campaigns across the country.
The 2026 event was held on June 11 at the London Hilton Paddington.
