Joe’s presentation is about his journey with autism, from school to now. He talks about what strategies school had used for certain behaviours, and if they didn’t work, then he explains why not. There are lots of insights about how a person with autism ‘works’. Joe also discusses how he was able to independently travel to college and how he didn’t want to use the services of the special needs department, preferring to be the same as everyone else.
Joe is 24 years old and had his diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder when he was 6 years old. Joe attended a mainstream school until he was 11, where he went to another mainstream school but with an Autistic Resource Base attached. After school, Joe attended further education for 4 years and achieved a Level 5 HNC in I.T. with a Distinction. He decided to start giving talks to schools, colleges and the general public, and recently had a very successful presentation at the Autism Show in London.
