Building Back Fairer Panel

16 Sep 2021
Keynote Theatre

“It’s not possible.” This is the response we received when we asked for remote working opportunities in an attempt to bridge the employment gap. “It just won’t work” is the rhetoric we faced when we asked for access to telehealth to reduce the cost and time we spent travelling. For years, the disabled community have tirelessly campaigned for small but meaningful changes in society and have repeatedly been told no, so it’s hard to not feel angry when these simple freedoms have suddenly been made possible overnight by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Led by Tom Jamison, this panel will question why it took a global pandemic for disabled people to be listened to, and while acknowledging the deeply devastating impact COVID has had on the community, our panellists will explore how we can build on the momentum of what’s been made possible during the pandemic to initiate systemic change. This panel has been designed for the people, by the people, and will look to address issues in employment, quality education, accessible travel and healthcare in a bid to understand what a fairer, more inclusive society can look like and how we can get there.
