Organisation: Inspirational Speaker and Wheelchair User Subject: This CPD seminar is presented by a full-time wheelchair user. Hear first-hand how simple ideas can lead to easy and comfortable living. Many of these ideas can be incorporated in an existing home. Using his own award-winning grand design as an example, Mark will describe the innovative features that make this house extremely easy and comfortable to live in. Many of the solutions make life easier for everyone. In the future, these innovations for easy living may become standard, but you can hear about them today. Dr Gill Ward, OT & Principal Lecturer in Assistive Tech Darren Awang, OT and Course Director Organisation: Coventry University Health Design & Technology Institute (HDTI) Subject: The seminar will examine the principles and importance of inclusive design and explore ways in which OTs can contribute to good design by understandnig the problems users face and working with companies to develop innovative and appropriate solutions. Case studies will be included to illustrate how this can be achieved. |

Organisation: Age UK Subject: Prevention is better than cure, but what is the scope for improving health and wellbeing in later life? The speaker will outline possible actions to improve health and wellbeing for older people and consider cost-implications. |
12:30pm - Dropped feet, trips and falls ......... How FES can be used to improve walking and therefore confidenceSpeaker: Jon Graham Functional electrical stimulation (FES) activates the muscles that lift the foot at the ankle and enables the user to clear the ground during swing phase. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) investigated this technology and concluded that it was safe and effective for treating foot drop. The workship will provide a brief review of the neurophysiology of electrical stimulation and the literature on effectiveness of FES for preventing trips and falls. There will be a thorough independent overview of the three currently available FES systems in the UK for professionals to be better able to advise their patients n which might be best to help them: |
