There are around 13.3 million people living with a disability in the UK, 11% of which depend on the use of a wheelchair. However, every individual has a unique combination of needs and symptoms. Meaning there is a huge demand for a broad spectrum of bespoke medical equipment.
My name is Lauren and I have a complex and rare disability, which has drastically impacted my ability to live a normal life. Likewise, my partner Felix has his own difficulties as he has Dyslexia. Together our disabilities mean we face a multitude of challenges on a daily basis, some of which we know we share with other people living with different conditions. Felix had the opportunity and privilege to work with many patients living with various physical disabilities, their carers and their medical professionals throughout his PhD. It was during this experience that we realised that the struggles we faced on a daily basis were universal. Whether you are a patient or a carer, we should not have to justify our conditions. If you need anything, whether it is a piece of equipment; an appointment with a consultant or a medical investigation you have to FIGHT for it. You have to become your own expert and spend hours collating information that surrounds your condition. This is where we want to help you. These tasks can be extremely lonely, daunting and difficult due to the number of unreliable sources and the endless sales pitches. So, our aim is to create something to make some of these processes easier and more enjoyable.
Our belief is to make Access Your Life a safe space where you can communicate with others, share knowledge and advice. We would like you to review any medical aids, adaptations and supports you have used regardless of whether it was a positive or negative experience. We hope you will no longer have to make a decision based on a sales pitch from a supplier or rely on vast amounts of unrelated online sources. With the directory of reviews created, we want you to form a realistic opinion on how well a device meets your individual needs. We have learnt first-hand how the right piece of equipment can transform someone’s life, so we want everyone to have the opportunity to improve their quality of life, whether you are a patient, carer or a family member/friend supporting someone with their medical condition or disability.
We are making a start with wheelchairs and scooters, as they are one of the biggest needs. Then as we grow, we hope to expand our website to incorporate all forms of equipment. Meaning users will soon be able to review other medical products. We have also just launched a trusted rehoming scheme. So many people living with a disability have a device that they can no longer use, yet they are either too scared to sell it onto someone who doesn’t truly need it; or they are struggling to find potential buyers. Therefore, we have created a set up that ensures your Wheelchair meets the needs of the buyer. We will also support you throughout the whole process for a small fee.
Kate says that Access Your Life is “a fantastic company ran by two very passionate people who want to make a difference. When I needed to buy a wheelchair I wish there was a site like this and I can’t wait to see what other things Access Your Life will have to offer in the future!”
